The Concept of Second Enlightenment Clubs:
a) Nature adapts to change and works to build complexity by connecting networks of small nodes. This same principle undergirds the foundation of the network of Second Enlightenment Clubs that are evolving throughout the US and other countries.
As small groups come together to think and dialogue about community transformation and the concepts of a Second Enlightenment, new ideas and methods appropriate to a constantly changing and increasingly complex society will emerge and spread new capacities like a virus
b) The purpose and intent of Second Enlightenment Clubs is to:
1) seed new ways to think about the future to help communities begin to understand the impact of megatrends,
2) establish local groups of 8-15 self-selected individuals who are interested in dialoguing about trends and key transformative principles within a futures context of constant change,
3) provide initial material for each Club to begin a "futures generative dialogue, and
4) to have ideas emerge from the dialogue that can be integrated into each local community as a 21st century research and development project as well as shared with other SEClubs throughout the
world
c) the material that is given to each SE Club to initiate the dialogue. From that point, each group decides how to move forward.
CharlotteViewpoint.org, an independent opinion web magazine published in Charlotte, NC and edited by Mark Peres, has featured the concept of the Second Enlightenment and SEClubs in their most recent edition. Mr. Peres has caught both the meaning and the spirit of the COTF Second Enlightenment effort in the article entitled Community of the Future.
