SUSAN ANDERSON - CANDIDATE STATEMENT

I'm Susan Anderson, and I'm running for re-election to the Town Council of Blacksburg. I was elected in May 2006, becoming the sixth woman ever elected to Blacksburg’s council. Because I received the most votes in that election, I was vice mayor for a two-year term--the second woman to hold that position in the history of Blacksburg.

I was born in Amherst County, Virginia, the oldest of four daughters. Having graduated summa cum laude from Mary Washington College in 1980 with undergraduate degrees in mathematics and classical civilization, I began graduate work in mathematics at Virginia Tech in the fall of 1980. I earned my masters degree in 1982 and have been teaching mathematics at Virginia Tech since then. I am currently a Senior Instructor.

During my many years in Blacksburg I have been energetically engaged in grassroots and civic activism. Through volunteering with numerous organizations in the community, serving on boards of directors in local, regional and statewide organizations, contributing eight years to the Virginia Tech faculty senate, and advising student groups for nearly two decades at Virginia Tech, I have developed a deep understanding of many of the values and concerns of Blacksburg’s diverse citizenry.

Serving over three years on town council, I have learned much about the complex workings of town government and the important issues we face as a community. I have gained valuable leadership experience on council and through my other civic engagements, which include membership on the Blacksburg Housing and Community Development Advisory Board, Blacksburg Partnership Board of Directors, Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg, Downtown Revitalization Committee (chair), Friends of the Farmers Market, New River Valley Agency on Aging (vice chair), and South Blacksburg Transportation Planning Task Force.

As the only incumbent in the race, I know first hand the enormous amount of time and hard work this office entails. Effective service on town council requires a person who has enormous energy and is very organized, someone with a keen sense of responsibility and a strong work ethic. These are traits that I possess.

If re-elected to town council, I pledge to continue working tirelessly to preserve what to is great about our town while helping to guide us into an even better future based on the shared values of our community: smart growth, environmental preservation, a high quality of life for a diverse population, transparency in government with broad citizen involvement in civic affairs.

I believe that the achievement of this vision requires leadership and hard work in the following areas:

√ Managing sustainable growth by adherence to our Comprehensive Plan

√ Revitalizing our historic downtown as a vibrant retail and arts center

√ Rehabilitating the old Middle School as a civic, cultural, educational, and recreational resource

√ Protecting neighborhood integrity and improving community livability

√ Promoting diverse housing options, including workforce housing

√ Preserving green space and natural areas

√ Pursuing more recreational opportunities, including new athletic fields, for residents of all ages

√ Enhancing collaborative relationships with Virginia Tech and Montgomery County

√ Ensuring openness in government

√ Encouraging citizen participation
