KRISHA CHACHRA - CANDIDATE STATEMENT

Born and Raised in Blacksburg, Virginia, Krisha Chachra is invested in helping her hometown grow in smart, responsible ways. She is an advocate for a vibrant downtown and has a clear vision for Blacksburg's potential. As an active citizen, Krisha cares about her community and listens to the concerns of her friends and fellow Blacksburg residents.

Krisha Chachra is the author of Homecoming Journals: Dreaming Big in a small town, a compendium of essays about growing up in Blacksburg. She is a native of Blacksburg, attended Margaret Beeks Elementary and both Blacksburg Middle and High School. After leaving for college and graduate school and working around the country, Krisha returned to her native Blacksburg to continue writing and get a PhD at Virginia Tech in Urban Affairs and Planning.

She is a regular columnist for Bella Magazine and NRV Magazine, contributes to National Public Radio affiliates and was the host of Virginia’s daily, live, call-in TV show, Blue Ridge LIVE! on the PBS affiliate, Blue Ridge Public Television. Her work has appeared in U Magazine, The Honolulu Advertiser, USA Weekend Magazine and the Roanoke Times. She has traveled to over 40 countries in 6 continents compiling human-interest stories for publication.

Krisha holds degrees from William & Mary and American University and was appointed to the state of Virginia’s Board of Psychology by former Governor Mark Warner before most recently living in Honolulu, HI where she taught communication courses at Hawaii Pacific University.

Besides attending Virginia Tech, Krisha is active in the community and helps to coordinate the creative professionals mixer “Up on the Roof” every month for locals. She is on Blacksburg’s Towing Board and is active with organizing community activities for locals and is a founding member of Downtown Events LLC.

Krisha would like to see smart, calculated growth in Blacksburg – a mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly downtown and create a business-friendly environment for locals who want to stay and grow in Blacksburg. As a local Blacksburgian herself, Krisha wants to see her hometown make visionary decisions for business but also protect the integrity and charm of local neighborhoods. She is pro local business (her family has remained active in the community for over 35 years, starting the first official company as a tenant at the Corporate Research Center, VTLS Inc.), pro local farming and smart growth. She loves the natural parks and forests in the area and hopes Blacksburg can continue to develop from the inside out rather than creating sprawl that will harm the beautiful Blue Ridge environment around us. She welcomes any ideas concerned citizens may have about our town and hopes to help make this place more attractive for creative and young professionals to live, work and raise families.
