ROBERT (TOM) ROGERS
I moved to Blacksburg in 1973 to attend Virginia Tech. After completing both a bachelors and a master in electrical engineering, I began my career with Poly-Scientific (now MOOG Components Group). Over my career I have earned eight patents and received the prestigious Corporate Award. My many years of experience as an engineer has ingrained within me a practical approach to problem-solving.

Since moving to Blacksburg, I have continuously involved myself in the community. In 1982 I joined the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and have, over the years, responded to thousands of emergencies. To better serve the community in this capacity, I have also completed FEMA’s Professional Development and Advanced Professional Development for Emergency Management courses. I feel a great sense of fulfillment in having helped many of my neighbors during their times of greatest need.

I believe most of the candidates share a common vision for Blacksburg; we envision greater economic opportunity, a greater sense of community, and a commitment to environmental responsibility. However, I believe our town’s greatest challenge is ensuring that each of these essential components of our Town’s development are given equal consideration.

It would seem to many residents of Blacksburg that while the current Town Council has given ample consideration to our environmental responsibility, their attention to our social and economic needs has been lacking. It is all well and good to make being green our highest priority, but there is a point when our inequitable devotion to this component will lead to the decline of the remaining two. For example, we have not made enough of an effort to bring retail to Blacksburg. Town Council has made our laws concerning commercial development prohibitive and has, on occasion, been outright combative. With commercial development comes an array of benefits; jobs are created and consumer choice is expanded, but most importantly our tax base is enlarged. The additional revenue from property taxes and business license taxes would allow us to address many of our Town’s other needs.

This upcoming election we need to consider the social, economic, and environmental aspects of our Town’s development; they are intrinsically linked and each require our sincere attention. I hope to bring to Town Council a more balanced approach in accord with the needs and desires of all residents of Blacksburg.
